Samba

The program SAMBA is used in the CSB to allow users to access their UNIX filesystems through Microsoft WIndows 95/98/NT without using FTP. This gives the users "hard disk space" on the NT workstations to store personal files w/o the worry of them being deleted.

Getting an Account:

The SAMBA account is separate from your UNIX account so if you haven't explicitly asked for a SAMBA account, you do not already have one. To obtain an account. see David Keller in the CSB. The account name will be your UNIX id. The password can be different than your UNIX password but it is not recommended since this will cause a 30-60sec delay when loggin into the CSB NT workstations.

Changing the SAMBA Password:

When you change your UNIX account password the SAMBA account password is NOT changed as well. To change your password, do the following:

  1. From within the CSB core network, log into pcserver.core via ssh or rlogin.
  2. Type "smbpasswd" and follow the prompts.
