Network Access to Core Computing from Outside

2009.03.06 -- Note that these instructions may change in the near future. Check this page if you run into problems.

Effective 1 March, 2009, the following network services are available from outside the Core.

Secure login ssh username@quail.rc.yale.edu (SSH Primer), (Problems?)
Secure FTP sftp username@quail.rc.yale.edu
Mail The Core no longer provides any email services. Use your Yale email account.

Make sure you are using ssh version 2.x (The latest Windows client supports this). work.

Do not run any resource-intensive program on quail -- it has limited memory and CPU power. But you can use it to submit and check the status of batch jobs.

You can download ssh2 for your Windows PC from Yale's software distribution site. You can only access this site from a Yale computer. If that link does not work, or for other platforms, go to Yale's software library frontdoor, and look for SSH.

If you have problems using sftp to upload your files from a PC to the CSB Core, check the version of ssh on your PC. Versions 2.2 (and earlier) have problems with setting file ownership. You should upgrade to version 2.3. See also here.
