Easy Procedure for Changing CSB Core Passwords
You can get an
explanation of the
password changing procedure, or you can
just do it.
In either case, you should first read about choosing a
password.
Choosing a Password
You must:
- Use a mixture of upper and lower case and use at least one numeric
or punctuation character. It is not sufficient to use the
number 1 for the letter l or i, or the number
0 for the letter o, or 4 for A.
- Use at least 6 and at most 8 characters
You should not use:
- Any part of the user's name or user's family name.
- Numbers significant to you or those close
to you: e.g. SSN, license number phone, birthdate, etc.
- The name of your favorite anything.
- Any name, number, people, or place associated
with MBB or Yale.
- English words spelled correctly (even if special
characters on either end). DIctionary words in any language.
- The names of famous people, places, things,
movies, TV shows, songs, slogans, etc.
- Published password examples (especially those listed below).
- Simple modifications of real words such as backwards spelling
or permuting the letters, or adding a numeric at the beginning
or end: e.g. not john or nhoj or ohnj or
john2.
The following items serve as a base for creating a good password:
- Embedding two or more extra characters such
as numerics, symbols or control characters.
- Misspelling the word.
- Using unusual capitalization.
- Concatenating two or more words.
- Interleaving two or more words: e.g. cdaotg22
interleaves dog and cat.
- The first letter of each word in a line from
a poem, EG: qtr,nm for, Quoth the
raven, nevermore.
- A great athletic achievement from your
high school career, eg, 73yTD! for a 73-yard touchdown
or 440/58.3 for a pretty good quarter-mile.
Only the first eight characters are counted in the password,
so adding
special characters after that is wasted effort.
