Connecting and setting up Windows PCs in the CSB
This document describes in more detail how to connect your Windows PC to
the CSB network. You should have already gone through the steps on the
previous page for
plugging into the network and
getting a network address. These instructions should work for Windows
2000 and earlier; Windows XP should be sufficiently similar, but sometimes
hides settings that you need to find.
Set up your computer's network parameters
If you are using a laptop which you regularly move between
the CSB and other networks, you will probably want to configure it to
obtain network information automatically using DHCP. See the
separate instructions
for this instance.
Make sure you have administrative access if you are configuring a computer
with multiple user accounts. Select "No" whenever the process asks you if you
want to reboot the computer, until all steps are complete.
- Double-click on the "My Computer" icon:

- Double-click on "Control Panel":

- Double-click on the Network folder:

- If there is NO Local Area Connection, there could be something wrong with the
physical
network setup.
- Otherwise, right-click on "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties"
from the menu:

- If you do not have all of the components with checkboxes shown above,
add them:
- Click "Install...":

- To add "Client for Microsoft Networks", select "Client", click
the "Add..." button, and select from list.
- To add "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks", select
"Service", click the "Add..." button, and select from list.
- To add "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", select "Protocol", click the
"Add..." button, and select from list.
- If all the components are present, select "Internet protocol (TCP/IP)" and
click "Properties":

In the field for "IP address", insert your assigned IP number, and fill in
all other fields as shown above.
- Click the "Advanced..." button:

Use the "Add..." buttons to enter the indicated DNS server addresses, and
to fill in the indicated entries for "Append these DNS suffixes". Type
"core" for the DNS suffix for this connection.
- Click OK to close all of the networking setup windows. Press "No" when
prompted to restart the machine.
- Right-click on the "My Computer" icon and select "Properties" from the
menu:

- Click the "Properties" button:

Enter the name you chose for the computer, and the name for your lab's
Windows workgroup (usually the last name or initials of your P.I.).
- Click OK to exit these windows, and reboot the computer.
- If something went wrong, carefully check over all of the above settings.
If everything seems to be set correctly, harass the Core staff.
