OCR -- Scanning Text

Two of the Core Windows computers have Epson scanners; at present these are painter and rigger. One of the scanners has an attachment for scanning slides.

There are two programs available for scanning documents and performing OCR (optical character recognition).

Adobe Capture - performs OCR saving the document as a PDF file
- Scan the document using Acrobat Exchange.
- Under the "Document" menu, select "Capture pages".
- Select the scanned page(s) you wish to perform OCR on.
- Wait while the OCR completes.
- Modify the PDF file using the "text tool" seen on the top menu bar.
Microsoft Office Tools - Performs OCR from the scanner or a scanned file, and exports to a Microsoft Word document. Avaliable on rigger.
- From "Start" Menu:

		  Microsoft Office Tools ->
		    Microsoft Office Document Scanning
	  
```
- The first time, the program may go through a scanner testing routing that takes several minutes.
- Place a page on the scanner. Press the SCAN icon in the application.
- The scanned page will appear in a window. Click the ->W icon on the top menu bar.
- The converted text will appear in a Word window.
- Save the document in the format you wish.
