SHARP is a computer program for macromolecular crystallography. It operates on reduced, merged and scaled data from SIR(AS), MIR(AS) and MAD experiments, refines the heavy-atom model, helps detect minor or disordered sites using likelihood-based residual maps, and calculates phase probability distributions for all reflexions in the dataset.

The new version of SHARP includes the following features:

• autoSHARP: a fully automated structure solution system - from merged data to automatic model building (uses SHARP as phasing engine).
• interface to ARP/wARP (see www.arp-warp.org) from SHARP output.

Existing features have been extensively improved:

• the heavy atom refinement and phasing in SHARP is more robust and powerful
• density modification protocols are significantly improved
• allows use of a single server for submission of jobs to a heterogeneous cluster of machines
• new documentation and tutorials are also completely rewritten

To use SHARP please ask Shanti Kunchaparty or another staff member to create a user account for you, specifying the directory where the 'sharpfiles' directory should be created for you. (available for CSB users only). Staff may refer to http://www.csb.core/sysadm/servers/sharp/sharp.html for further details.

SHARP runs from within a browser (here netscape) and requires that over 2MB of SHARP environment files be deposited in your working directory. 
To access the SHARP environment you will need a special user ID and password.
You will be emailed information on how to set up the required files  to start using sharp.

Sharp is now available (in the CSB core) on thor.core (Tru64 Unix) and emperor.core (linux) in an interactive mode only.

To run Sharp on thor type:
netscape http://thor:8080

To run Sharp on emperor type:
netscape http://emperor:8080

If you get an error of the form Netscape's network connection was refused by the server it means that the SHARP server has not been properly started. Ask one of the staff to start the SHARP server -- they can get the necessary instructions at http://www.csb.core/sysadm/servers/sharp/sharp.html#startup .

Sample files may be copied to the user's sharpfiles directory from /srv/local/sharp/samples/sharp/
