Ieee1394 (FireWire, i.LINK) is a serial protocol which allows devices to be connected to computers. It is like USB, but faster. It is mainly used for image and video processing, and increasingly for storage (disk drives). Like USB, it supports hotplug, which means devices can be connected (and, with suitable care, disconnected) from computers while they are running.
Ieee1394 disks are standard disk drives, and use a high-speed interface. This means that they stor up to 160GB (September, 2002) and transfer data at speeds of 10MB/s to 20MB/s (or higher).
They are available from a number of manufacturers. In the CSB, we have tested the Maxtor personal storage disks, which come in 80GB, 120GB and 160GB sizes. The price ranges from $266 to $389 from CDW-G (slightly less with Yale discount). They also stock drives from a wide variety of other manufacturers, in comparable sizes and prices.
