This page describes email services that the CSB provided before November, 2004. Some of these services are still provided, but they are not supported. CSB users are urged to use the normal Yale email services, as described in the CSB website documentation.

Getting Started

If you have a CSB computing account, but will continue to rely on another email account, you should forward your CSB email to your main email account. This will make sure that mail sent to your CSB account will reach you.

If you are going to use the CSB mail system as a primary email account, the easiest way to get started is by using WEBmail. You can use it from any reasonably capable web browser, anywhere on the internet. It uses encryption, so you will be reasonably secure.

CSB Email Topics

Using IMAP clients to access email

All access to CSB email uses the IMAP protocol. This means that you can view and have access to the same set of mail folders, regardless of how and from where you access your CSB email account. For more information on IMAP, click here.

In addition to WEBmail, you can access email with any client that supports IMAP and SSL (Secure Sockets Layer for security). Clients are programs like Netscape (or Mozilla), Pine, Outlook Express, and Eudora.

You are welcome to use any client that works with our system. But we only support Netscape/Mozilla. This means that if you are using another program, and can't get it to work, we won't be able to help.

The settings you will need for any IMAP client to receive mail include:

For your outgoing mail server: More detailed instructions are available for Netscape 4 and Netscape 6. Version 7 is similar to 6 and  Pine .

Setting Email Forwarding

If your username is ringo and you want all your mail to go to your account at ringo9933@yahoo.com, create a file called .forward in the home directory of your CSB unix account. The file should contain a single line with your new email address:

ringo9933@yahoo.com

You can forward your mail to yahoo, and also keep a copy locally. But remember to check your mail in both places so the mailboxes don't fill up. Put the following in your .forward file:

\ringo, ringo9933@yahoo.com

Notes

  1. Not quite all. At this writing (March, 2003) it is still possible to use POP in some circumstances. But we don't encourage it and won't make it easy for you.
