The following data is supplied by the user for each set of data archived to DVD. The codes are R for required, O for optional. The data may be written on the DVD label, logged to a permanent online database, or both.
| Fieldname | Label | Log | Example | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ID | R | R | rib | Short one-word identifier. It need not be globally unique, because a timestamp will be appended. |
| xtal | R | R | Sr soak | description of crystal |
| facility | R | R | BNL | data collection facility |
| detector | O | O | X25 Q315 | beamline and detector (should these be two separate fields?) |
| date | O | O | 20051218 | date data were collected |
| who | R | R | satwik | person(s) collecting or responsible for data |
| lab | R | R | Steiz | PI |
| comment | O | O | These data are probably no good. They were collected during a full moon on Friday the thirteenth, after a black cat placed a ladder across the doorway. | Put whatever you want here. It will extend over multiple lines at the bottom of the label. There is space for about 150 characters. Excess text will be lost. |
In addition to the user-supplied data, each disk label will record a sequence number in the form disc 02 of 11. The database will record the total discs in the set, and the type of disc (CDR, DVDR, etc). A list of directories and files on each disk will be available via the online datbase.
The use of the Rimage DVD-writing robot will enable us to maintain a standardized method of archiving crystallographic data. We will be able to maintain a database of information about all data backed up in this manner, although tracking the physical location of the backed-up data does not seem practicable.
Each archiving job will include all data in one or more user-selected directories. This may include raw and/or processed crystallographic data. (Actually, this procedure can be used to back up anything you want, including pictures from Cousin Mabel's 45th birthday. But a different procedure should be used for non-crystallographic data).
The following information must be provided by the user for each archiving job. The information will be recorded in a permanent online database, and most of it will be recorded on the disc labels.
