CSB Rimage labels

The following data is supplied by the user for each set of data archived to DVD. The codes are R for required, O for optional. The data may be written on the DVD label, logged to a permanent online database, or both.

In addition to the user-supplied data, each disk label will record a sequence number in the form disc 02 of 11. The database will record the total discs in the set, and the type of disc (CDR, DVDR, etc). A list of directories and files on each disk will be available via the online datbase.

CSB X-ray Crystallography data archive

The use of the Rimage DVD-writing robot will enable us to maintain a standardized method of archiving crystallographic data. We will be able to maintain a database of information about all data backed up in this manner, although tracking the physical location of the backed-up data does not seem practicable.

Each archiving job will include all data in one or more user-selected directories. This may include raw and/or processed crystallographic data. (Actually, this procedure can be used to back up anything you want, including pictures from Cousin Mabel's 45th birthday. But a different procedure should be used for non-crystallographic data).

The following information must be provided by the user for each archiving job. The information will be recorded in a permanent online database, and most of it will be recorded on the disc labels.

ProjectID. This is a short, one-word description, like "ribosome". A unique jobID will be automatically generated from the projectID and a timestamp. Thus, ribosome-20060218-1032 and ribosome-20051220-1625 are separate jobIDs, representing two separate datasets sharing the same ribosome ProjectID.
Xtal. A short word or phrase, eg, "Sr soak"
Facility. Where the dataset was collected, eg, "BNL" or "CSB Core".
Detector. Beamline and/or detector, eg, "X25 Q315". (Should these be two separate fields? Do we need them at all?"
Date. Data collection date, eg, 20051119
Who. Name of person collecting or responsible for data.
Lab. Name of PI or other identifier of the lab.
Media. What kind of media is used (CDR, DVDR, etc.)
Count. How many discs in this data set.
Comments. Up to 200 characters of additional user-supplied information.
