VMware in the CSB
VMware has been installed on PELICAN and PUFFIN to allow users to run
Windows 98 applications in a Linux environment. Specifically,
MS Office is installed on both machines. Since the maximum colors
able to be displayed are 256, installation of graphics programs such
as Photoshop and Canvas would be pointless. Using VMware, you
can perform word processing and other office functions as well as print
to all CSB networked printers.
There is one license per workstation and VMware will not run if the
license is checked out. To run vmware, do the following:
-
type "setup vmware" to setup paths and links to vmware files
-
type "run_vmware" to start VMware.
-
A window will pop up asking to choose a configuration. Choose "Cancel" since
the path shown may not be in your home directory.
-
Goto "File -> Open..." and choose "win98.cfg" in the right of the
window.
-
Click "Power On" to start Windows.
-
Alot of warning messages will pop up which vary depending on which machine
you are using. You can just press "Ok" for all of them and choose
to ignore them as well by highlighting the box "Don't ever show this hint
again".
-
The Windows emulator will now start, looking like a typical PC booting
up. The Windows logo will look bad... don't worry about it.
-
When Windows starts, give your CSB User name and SAMBA password
when prompted. This will allow you to access the Core disks using
"Network Neighborhood".
-
You now have the familar Windows98 environment. You can make any
changes you want to this since they will NOT be saved once you exit.
-
To Exit Windows, choose "Start -> Shut down" and this will bring
you back to the VMware window.
-
To Exit VMware, choose "File -> Exit".
Some hints for VMware:
-
To get your X-term cursor back from Windows, press "Ctrl Alt
Esc" and Windows will release your cursor.
-
No changes you make will be saved in the virtual Windows environment so
be sure to save any important files to the SAMBA disks. If you
don't have a SAMBA account, see David Keller.
-
To FTP files, use Internet Explorer and type "ftp://$user@darwin.core"
in the location bar. Provide your CSB password when prompted.
